Exceptional real estate sale on Lake Como

Our colleagues at Italy Sotheby's International Realty are offering for sale a magnificent property on Lake Como, next to George Clooney's.

Lake Como's reputation for chic and voluptuousness is well established. With its inimitable landscape and sublime villas built between the 16th and 19th centuries, this corner of Italy attracts the whole world. The great Italian poet Alessandro Manzoni described it in his famous novel The Betrothed as: "This arm of Lake Como, which turns southwards between two uninterrupted chains of mountains, all gulfs and coves, according to the projections or indentations of their relief, comes to narrow almost at once, and to take on the shape of a river, between a promontory, on the right, and a wide coastline on the other side". Lake Como thus became a privileged place where, from the 16th century onwards, writers and artists, but also the Lombards themselves, built magnificent residences that dominated the landscape, either on the shore or on the hills. Among the lakeside communities that attract today's buyers is Laglio, located on the Riva romantica.

A cinema-lined shoreline

In Laglio, the most famous villa is certainly Villa Oleandra, made famous by its owner George Clooney. During the 20th century, this Villa had belonged to John Heinz, the famous "Ketchup King". Paparazzi and onlookers flock to the gates, while behind them the Clooney family receives distinguished guests.

Lake Como has also been the setting for many famous films and has thus marked some mythical scenes of the 7th art, such as the wedding scene between Anakin (played by Hayden Christensen) and Padmé (played by Natalie Portman) in Star Wars, Episode II, Attack of the Clones (George Lucas, 2002), filmed in the gardens of Villa del Balbianello. The same villa was also the location for scenes from the James Bond film Casino Royale (directed by Martin Campbell in 2006, with Daniel Craig in the lead role). Alfred Hitchcock's Garden of Pleasure, meanwhile, was shot on Comacina Island and the Lavedo promontory in Lenno.

An exceptional villa

The neighbouring Villa for sale is surrounded by a vast garden and has a terrace overlooking the lake, a total of 3,300 sqm of charm. This majestic property was renovated under the auspices of architect Alessandra Guanziroli, while the decoration was supervised by Yuri Andreev. In all, there are 7 bedrooms and 17 bathrooms, with parquet floors, refined woodwork and neoclassical furniture. Frescoes cover the walls, including the internal staircase that leads to many rooms, which are themselves decorated with elegant paintings. The living room offers a breathtaking view of the lake through the bay window.

Outside, the estate has two swimming pools, one indoor of 25 m2 and one outdoor of 75 m2. The property also has an entire wing dedicated to leisure activities: pool table, screening room, a cellar with a capacity of 2,000 bottles, a spa and a fitness room.

Lake Como: a privileged place

From the 16th century onwards, writers and artists, but also the Lombards themselves, had magnificent residences built that dominate the landscape, on the shore or on the hills surrounding the lake. In 2014, it is considered one of the 20 most beautiful lakes in the world for its microclimate and the quality of its environment, dotted with prestigious villas and villages.

Part of what makes Como so desirable is its location, in the heart of the enchanting Alpine landscape. Como offers holidaymakers pure beauty and unparalleled tranquillity. The lower part of the lake is known for its nature trails and picturesque streets along the lake, as well as for properties such as Villa Olmo, Villa d'Este and Villa Carlotta. The upper part of the lake is lined with private villas where famous residents spend their summer holidays, enjoying the unique, pleasant and relaxing atmosphere that surrounds these places.

Living the Lake Como lifestyle means embracing the heart of Italian culture: its culinary arts, its people and its incredible nature. Buying a property on Lake Como is a journey into the most refined elegance - only 30 minutes from the main airport of Northern Italy.

This Laglio property is offered for sale by Italy Sotheby's International Realty.
