Roquebrune - Cap Martin - Menton

Located between Menton and Monaco, the splendid Roquebrune-Cap-Martin covers one of the most beautiful sights of the French Riviera, from the edge of the Mediterranean to the hilltop village of 933 hectares, for the delight of lovers of authenticity and old stones, fans of the roaring twenties and architecture enthusiasts.

Attracted by the unique beauty of the area, with famous artists - such as Rodin, Cocteau, or Monet – chose Roquebrune Cap Martin as a preferred holiday destination and also as a creative destination. Later, Winston Churchill, Marlene Dietrich, Sacha Guitry, Josephine Baker and Jacques Brel came for inspiration to this district that combines with elegance shapes, colors and lifestyle.

With its rich past, Roquebrune retains in effect superb testimonies of a bygone era which made its wealth:

At the heart of the old medieval village reigns the Grimaldi Castle (xith century) and its secular treasures; at the bypass of the narrow streets and stone houses, the walker will discover an olive tree of more than 3000 years, and then the oldest dungeon in France, shielding the rich history of this ancient fortress in Monaco facing the sea.

Cap Martin, former hunting reserve of the GRIMALDI’s, later turned into a Belle Epoque Resort, where the Danish architect Tersling (1857 - 1920) realized superb luxury villas to lush gardens and other palaces. The construction of an prestigieuse establishment ‘Le Grand Hôtel du Cap’, in the 1890s', attracts many crowned heads, Edward VII of England to François-Joseph I of Austria and his wife the Empress Sissi.

Its urbanization continues at a steady pace; sheltered behind thick vegetation, luxurious homes are adorned with remarkable architecture and gardens, such as the Villa Cyrnos - built in 1892 for the Empress of Montijo, Cypris Villa - built in 1902 for Madame Robert Douine, sponsor and wife of the Director of Department Stores of the Louvre in Paris, and Villa Torre Clementina - built in 1904 at the request of the wife of banker Louis Stern and novelist Ernesta Stern.

In the 30s, Eileen Gray offered her famous villa E-1027, when the architect Robert Streiz built "La Pausa" with Coco Chanel guidelines.

"I have a castle on the Cote d'Azur, which measures 3.66 meters by 3.66 meters. It is for my wife, it is extravagant with comfort, kindness". Le Corbusier

In 1951, the architect Le Corbusier built his famous cottage, located on the old coastal path by the seafront.

Roquebrune Cap Martin is a seaside resort rich in architecture and it’s flamboyant past which today remains the legacy of artists, architects and international nobility.
