Céline in Saint Tropez

Céline in Saint Tropez

The new spring/summer 2023 women's collection by Céline, one of the flagship brands of LVMH, was filmed and shot in October on the famous La Ponche beach in Saint Tropez, the setting for the mythical film "And God Created Woman". Other images were captured by drone at the citadel, the Salins or on the Ramatuelloise coast at the Villa Kerouac, the residential base of the stylist Hedi Slimane, artistic director of Céline since 2018.

A collection with a Tropezian DNA

It was Hedi Slimane himself who directed the video. In front of his lenses, about thirty models paraded above the sea, on the Pesquière slab redesigned in the colours of the LVMH brand. With this project broadcasted in anticipation of the show in Los Angeles on December 8, the brand presented its idea of Indie Summer.

A mix of feminine, French, minimalist, fresh and indie rock elements at the same time, such as the true DNA of Hedi Slimane, already explored during his time at Saint Laurent (from 2012 to 2016). The designer takes codes from Céline such as the sailor suit and adapts them to the relaxed, preppy atmosphere of Saint Tropez. Raphia, knitwear, and sailor buttons are all part of the mix.

A new way of doing fashion shows

The first lockdown allowed the artistic director to experiment with his own way of filming a show without an audience. From season to season, a salvo of campaign films proved that a great effect could still be achieved outside of a live show. The designer had already made a name for himself and his spectacular locations with his films such as the one at the Château Royal de Chambord for the Autumn/Winter 21/22 men's collection.

Collections and film locations are inter-connected. Here, Hedi Slimane is inspired by the charm and chic of Saint Tropez. Indeed, Saint Tropez, its beaches and its lifestyle have been a cradle of fashion since the 1960s with the influence of Brigitte Bardot and the jet-set she brought with her.

The Gulf of Saint Tropez became a cultural and social hotspot in the region during this period, and also became home to some magnificent real estate properties, mixing historic Provençal charm with contemporary villas.
