Residency in Andorra with Sotheby’s International Realty
Nestled in the heart of the Pyrenees, Andorra has become one of the most sought-after destinations for relocation in recent years. Between mountains and traditions, the principality combines security, exceptional natural surroundings, high quality of life, world-class healthcare and education, a favorable tax regime for individuals and businesses, and an ideal location between France and Spain, just a few hours’ drive from Nice.
Flexible residency options
Andorra offers two main types of residence permits: non-lucrative residence and active residence with a work permit.
Non-lucrative residence, formerly known as passive residence, is for foreign nationals establishing their primary residence in Andorra for at least 90 days per year. Permits are initially granted for one year, then renewable for three years, three more years, and finally ten years. Requirements include a clean criminal record, passport and civil status documents, proof of bank deposit, property ownership or rental agreement, health and disability insurance, a medical check-up, proof of income, and an investment in Andorra (for example in real estate, a local company, or a bank deposit).
For professionals with an international scope or for scientific, cultural or sporting reasons, non-lucrative residence also requires that the professional activity is based in Andorra, that at least one employee is hired, that 85% of services are provided abroad, and that the business plan is approved by the government.
Active residence, more restrictive, is for foreigners working in Andorra. Any Andorran company hiring a foreign employee must obtain a residence permit from the Ministry of the Interior. Quotas and renewal conditions vary depending on nationality and position.
Benefits of residency in Andorra
Holders of either active or non-lucrative residence permits enjoy family reunification, the ability to acquire property, register vehicles, boats or aircraft, exchange their driver’s license, open bank accounts, conduct financial operations without limits, and invest in the local economy.
A strategic and attractive environment
Located between France and Spain, Andorra combines a prosperous economy based on tourism, commerce, construction, and financial services with a modernized economic model aligned with European standards. Its favorable taxation, liberalized foreign investment policies, and exceptional quality of life make it a prime destination for individuals and businesses with international ambitions.
