Les Bravades de Saint-Tropez: tradition & centuries-old celebration, pride of Saint-Tropez residents.

On May 16, 17 and 18, 2022, after two years of inactivity due to Covid 19, the Bravades will once again be celebrated in Saint-Tropez:

This traditional Saint-Tropez celebration - both religious and military - is a real event in the village that everyone looks forward to in honor of the Patron Saint, Tropez, born in Tuscany in Pisa, also called Knight Torpès, or Torpez.

A piece of history:

He died in 68 after refusing to renounce his Christian faith, and, beheaded under the orders of Nero, Tropez is one of the first Italian Christian martyrs of the first century.

Because his body was discovered - after drifting on the Mediterranean Sea - on May 17, 68 on the beaches of "Héracléa" (which will later be renamed Saint-Tropez), he is today the Patron Saint of sailors and Patron Saint of Saint Tropez.

Three days punctuated by traditions

Organized by the municipality and the association of friends of Bravade and Saint-Tropez traditions, the ceremony begins on May 16 (see the program).

The mayor of Saint-Tropez, together with the mayor of Pisa, hands the pike to the Town Captain elected on Easter Monday for a year, while salvoes of rifles are fired by the sailors and blunderbusses by the musketeers.

The Gardes-Saint then take the statue of Saint Tropez out of the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption church in Saint-Tropez and take it in procession to the sound of bells, bugles and drums: a real effervescence in the heart of the village.

The next day, attend the mass of the musketeers, followed by the procession, during which the bravadoes raise their swords in the light on which is fixed a small blessed bouquet.

Saint-Tropez local women dressed in costume and the bravadoes followed by the authorities, and the population leave in procession in the streets of the city.

Ad usque Fidelis - faithful to the end:

This is the motto of Saint-Tropez. While the Cépoun, the great conductor, coordinates the body of Bravade for three days, enjoy the extraordinary atmosphere of a party that has not changed much over the years.

The poignant moments of the Bravades:

Firing of the salutes of honor, parades and procession in the streets of the city, taking of the pike and the flag, blessing of the bouquets during the mass of the musketeers, presentation of the red scarf of Saint-Tropez, salute to the saint of the Chapel of the Convent, and to finish, surrender of the pike and the flag on the evening of May 17, and the kiss of the relics of Torpès.

A cultural, traditional and authentic event in the heart of Saint-Tropez, a must-see.
