Dragon Hill: where architecture, art, and the creative spirit of the Côte d’Azur converge

Dragon Hill: where architecture, art, and the creative spirit of the Côte d’Azur converge

Perched in Mouans-Sartoux, between Cannes and Mougins, Dragon Hill stands as one of those rare places that are not only admired but truly experienced. Built in 1964 by Jacques Couëlle, this sculptural villa is among the most singular architectural creations of the Mediterranean coastline. A true inhabited sculpture, it unfolds across the terrain by respecting every curve and natural contour, giving rise to a harmonious ensemble intimately connected to the site’s topography. As Maxime Combot notes: “Here, one perceives a deep synergy with nature, so dear to Jacques Couëlle, for whom architecture should never dominate the landscape but converse with it… like a delicate balance.”

More recently, the villa was acquired by London gallerists Joe Kennedy and Jonny Burt, who transformed it into Dragon Hill, a true artist residency. Since then, the estate has continued its cultural vocation through a program dedicated to contemporary creators, preserving its unique artistic spirit. The sculpture park surrounding the house engages in a subtle dialogue with the architecture, creating a sensory path where light, volumes, and artworks echo one another in rare harmony.

The property has also hosted memorable dinners where Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso, and the cultural and intellectual circles of their time intersected, reinforcing its mythical aura and its deep connection to the artistic history of the Riviera.

Jacques Couëlle, the visionary architect

Jacques Couëlle (1920–1996) is renowned for his organic approach to architecture: each home becomes a living sculpture, embracing the topography and interacting with its environment. His “landscape houses” left a lasting imprint on the Riviera and inspired major architectural movements, including the celebrated Bubble House by his pupil Antti Lovag. Dragon Hill perfectly embodies Couëlle’s poetic and forward-thinking vision: a sculptural, intimate architecture deeply rooted in the Estérel landscape, blending into nature while celebrating light and volume.

Two complementary perspectives: architecture, culture and creation

Two key voices illuminate the essence of this extraordinary place.

Maxime Combot, general director and curator of Dragon Hill, is one of the leading specialists on the work of Jacques Couëlle. His mission is to anchor Dragon Hill within a demanding cultural dynamic, connecting its architectural heritage with the international artistic ecosystem. Through research, exhibition curation, and the development of bespoke artistic programs, he enables visiting artists to fully engage with Couëlle’s organic universe.

Véronique de Lavenne, negotiator at Côte d’Azur Sotheby’s International Realty, also carries an exceptional background in the art world: thirty years in galleries, formal training in art history, and a career dedicated to contemporary creation. Her eye is that of a passionate connoisseur, sensitive both to architectural gestures and to the artworks they shelter. She notes: “Dragon Hill is not merely a villa; it is a lived-in artwork… a creative, poetic, intimate universe where one can still imagine conversations between Picasso and Dalí.”

Dragon Hill today stands as a true sanctuary for creation: Couëlle’s organic architecture stimulates the gaze and imagination of artists, while monumental sculptures and landscape design establish a subtle dialogue with the natural surroundings.

A place sculpted for nature and art

The sculpture park does more than encircle the villa, it resonates with the organic architecture, crafting a gentle interplay between built forms and artistic works. Each sculpture appears to extend the lines of the house and interact with the Mediterranean light, offering an immersive experience. This harmonious fusion may inspire visitors to imagine integrating art into their own gardens or private spaces, prolonging the creative spirit of Dragon Hill.

As Maxime Combot reminds us: “Jacques Couëlle’s organic architecture does not compete with the contemporary artworks that inhabit it, it heightens the gaze and thought of the artists. Our primary vocation remains inspiration.”

Dragon Hill remains a confidential and private space, accessible by invitation only. Véronique adds: “At Côte d’Azur Sotheby’s International Realty, we value signature homes as we would a work of art. This type of organic architecture attracts an international clientele drawn to creation and to places with meaning.”

Mougins, a village of artists and gastronomy

Just minutes away, the village of Mougins offers authentic Provençal charm with its winding streets, art galleries and renowned restaurants. Dragon Hill’s location allows residents and guests to enjoy this cultural and gastronomic atmosphere while preserving the tranquillity and privacy of the estate.
